..FONT MISTAKESWhen images and fonts go very wrong

Ever made a mistake that was glaringly obvious to everyone else? Everyone makes mistakes at one time or another but design mistakes are far more visual than others. You can guarantee if it’s online somewhere it will be picked up. It may even go viral however not all press is good press! I’m just deciding what kind of lights to buy from B&Q this year!

Design mistakes are more often than not spelling mistakes and are so easily missed. Predictive text has a lot to answer for. However the spell checker on your document should be used at all times to avoid silly errors. When creating headlines or typographics the styles and shapes of the characters should be carefully chosen. The spacing between the letters must be viewed and considered carefully. Some letters may fill in or merge together if too closely spaced. The results can lead to some letters looking like others… With unfortunate results…

Suit yourselfBeing too clever with shadows and reflections can be counter productive!

When creating logos you can also be too clever. Developing a design for a logo for a business often uses letter forms within the image to make the logotype and symbol. Be very aware of how those letterforms interact with each other. Look at the negative shapes they create or look at them from a distance, those design mistakes can be extremely costly to remedy.

What one person sees isn’t necessarily how another will interpret it. May be we all have dirtier minds than we like to admit. While some images can be just mildly suggestive and funny, other similar images may not be what you want to portray for your business.
Always look at the designs upside-down, with half closed eyes and get other peoples views.

Often you don’t see a design mistake when its starring you in the face!

Many design mistakes are made because the designer takes something for granted or works with a design so frequently. The obvious can be easily missed. Again looking at the negative shapes and ‘through’ a design can help. When it is glaring you right in the face you will kick yourself!

magazine mistakes

The designer on these layouts really didn’t look hard enough at the final overall picture.

One last tip, make sure where your media will appear and how it will be folded on the shelf or stacked. This kind of result really could not have been foreseen! A very unfortunate design mistake! This is actually a head shot – or should I say a profile picture!
